Guiding Blind People with Haptic Feedback
نویسندگان
چکیده
Maintaining orientation while traveling in complex or unknown environments is a challenging task for visually impaired (VI) pedestrians. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to assist blind people during navigation between waypoints (walk straight) with tactors on their wrists. Our main goal is to decrease the cognitive load needed by blind people to follow instructions in overloaded environments. Two issues are discussed, 1) the number of vibration motors used; 2) the type of vibration dimensions issued. Preliminary results from of an informal evaluation performed with two blind users showed that vibrations could help the users maintaining their straight path, however patterns were sometimes confusing. This reinforced that walking an unknown path is a demanding and stressful task and the cognitive load should be reduced

Haptic Graphs for Blind Computer Users
In this paper we discuss the design of computer-based haptic graphs for blind and visually impaired people with the support of our preliminary experimental results. Since visual impairment makes data visualisation techniques inappropriate for blind people, we are developing a system which can make graphs accessible through haptic and audio media. The disparity between human haptic perception an...
متن کاملWeb-Based Haptic Applications for Blind People to Create Virtual Graph
Haptic technology has great potentials in many applications. This paper introduces our work on delivery haptic information via the Web. A multimodal tool has been developed to allow blind people to create virtual graphs independently. Multimodal interactions in the process of graph creation and exploration are provided by using a low-cost haptic device, the Logitech WingMan Force Feedback Mouse...

متن کاملThe Design and Evaluation of a Computer Game for the Blind in the GRAB Haptic Audio Virtual Environment
This paper describes the development and evaluation of a computer game for blind and visually impaired people using a new haptic audio virtual environment (HAVE). The GRAB HAVE consists of a new two-finger haptic interface and Haptic Geometric Modeller which enables people to locate and interact with 3D computer-generated objects using their sense of touch and audio feedback. A simple 3D search...
متن کاملHaptic virtual environments for blind people: further explorations with the Phantom device
The development of force feedback devices to add haptic information to virtual environments (VEs) has important implications for both able-bodied and disabled computer users. A study is presented in which blind and sighted participants used a PHANToM 1.0 force feedback device to feel a range of virtual grooved textures using both a thimble and stylus interaction device. Although there was no si...
